Pronunciation Dilemma for GNU/GNOME

Have you heard about GNOME or GNU ? You might , if you are a person who browses Linux world regularly or using Linux for a while.

I am not telling you about “What is GNOME or GNU ? ” rather a interesting stuff,how they can be pronounced. At first I pronounced them as “Gee-Nome” or “Gee-N-U”.

After reading “the-da-vinci-code” , I came to know about the “GNOME”, i mean what is it’s historical significance and most importantly how it should be pronounced. According to that book , it is pronounced like “NOME” and that “G” is ignored. Using this formula, I derived “GNU” as simply “NU” and quite confident about this derivation.

But only a few days ago I was browsing Bangla Wiki , and I found a word pronounced as “GO-NU” project. I was shocked. What is this ! If this were any arbitrary bangla site , I wouldn’t be that much bothered. But it’s Bangla Version of WikiPedia , besides I know that the person behind this project is tremendously brilliant. How could I ignore him !

So my search begins and with a very little effort I have found the informations from internet.

“GNOME” is pronounced as “guh-NOME” and “GNU” is “guh-NEW”. Interesting is, I have found some other correct pronunciations that have haunted me for many days. Besides I came to know about ( actually in details) about Open Source and Free Source naming game.

Kishore Kumar : A Magician

I have always been a great fan of Kishore Kumar’s voice. I was always astonished how a singer who has no institutionalized learning on singing became a singer !

Some “Tom Dick Harry” can’t do that for sure. Thats the mastery, supremacy of Kishore Kumar. It’s his voice that enchanted, in fact still enchanting millions of listeners souls. Few years ago , I read an article in some famous cine magazine , and I came to know that, a famous music director ( most probably Noushad , beg my pardon if the name is wrong) was total reluctant to use Kishore’s voice. He was not impressed by the fact that Kishore was not an trained singer but an occasional one. I totally agree with the view, but only about 99.99% mediocre voices. This is a fact , about the voices we see in so called talent hunt competitions like Closeup1 or Indian Idol. But I don’t know how anyone could think so about Kishore Kumar !! ( I should not say more than this since I am not even a bathroom singer :p )

Things I have found extraordinary in Kishore’s voice is his expression. He was so flawless in expressing. Obviously a great amount of thanks goes to music directors of that era specially to R D Burman with whom Kishore Kumar created a hell of magic !! R D Burman and Kishore kumar , a combination , which was so obvious to create a spellbinding music.

Recently while I was bored with all the songs in my collection, I decided to go through the Kishore’s Collection again. Listening them after a long time ( at least 6-7 months :P) is like rediscovering them. Every time I hear those songs , I feel blessed ! and I feel I should write some about him in my blog to share my thoughts with readers …

Is that a life I want ?

One of the major changes in Bangladesh in last 10 years, is certainly that , some telecom companies and MNCs started to pay higher salaries. When I admitted in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) in BUET , I saw that everyone is excited about the subject because of its huge job market. So , somehow its assumed that , a EEE graduate from BUET is obvious to join a telecom company.

Well , I can still remember what Physics says. Physics has some popular laws of Conservation ( like Conservation of mass , conservation of energy etc), which actually states that you can’t achieve anything from nothing. You need to put some hight input to get a satisfactory output. So , does we violate the laws here ? I mean we can get the big money . What’s the input here ?

The input is your life.

I can assure you that , you won’t have a life when you get a high paid job from this companies. I have seen a lot of examples in my life. First of all , I should talk about my cousin Pranad da , who is right now working in BRAC Bank IT sector , after working in many reputed organizations ( he’s quite famous for leaving his job and getting a better one). Pranab da is in service for many years ( like 7-8 years ) . I have always seen him tired , exhausted due to office loads. I have seen him to stay many nights in office to configure server/router/network or to repair it. Well like him, is my sister. Shes working for Warid Telecom Bangladesh. I can see under what pressure , stress and load she lives ! Every night I see her coming from office near 8-9 PM , taking her meal and go to bed, because she needs to attend office next morning at 9 AM.

There are another aspects that astonish me. I know Sumit Vai for many days. He’s my cousins friend , one of the founders of Golpo.Net. Sumit vai was a net freak , like hell. Well , Sumit vai entered in a job , and what can I say ! I have seen tonight in MSN Messenger, after many days. Is it sumit vai , who’s almost obsolete from internet ? After having a little chat , he said , “I gotta go because I have office tomorrow” . ewwwwwww man!

This night also I have a little chat with Farabi vai , one of the greatest seniors brothers of my life time , passed from my department. Farabi vai works for Banglalink. Well , I just sought an idea from him about a matter , and he repiled “Don’t ask me. I have forgot everything because of my job. Its killing me. I have just come from office” Well , I was chatting at something like 12:30 AM.

I am really much much scared. I know job means responsibility. They pay me high , so its implied I need to work more.Besides I can’t also expect the same flawless , singing – dancing student life ! It’s job world ! Its hard . But how much hard ? Is it logical to kill our other entities and run after the ambition and goals ?

I feel panic , when I think that I won’t have time to chit-chat with my friends , write some blogs or passing some good times in IRC ( i mean after coming from office , in night). If things are as hard as I see right now , then I think, its my last days in pompeii !!

For All ?

A few days ago I told that , Human Right is for all, in a debate discussion of Golpo.Net. I also told that, everybody should get the equal chance to express his/her view, whoever (S)he is.

Right now , I am withdrawing my words. Human Rights should not be applied to all.

Why I am telling this ?

Well, Recently I have visited a famous Bangla Blog Site after many days ( I don’t want to disclose the name , just as a hint , I can say that it starts with “S”. I hope smart people will catch it 😀 ). The more I surfed the site , the more I was stunned. Clearly the site is divided into 2 sides , Against the liberation of Bangladesh , Jamat-E-Islami and Against Jamat-E-Islami.

I had little idea how Jamat propagates their ideas thorugh some forums and sites in internet. But clearly I was unaware , how a famous blog site is used to propagate their views. As I told before in many posts that, Anti Liberation Fundamentalists are growing more powerful day by day. And it’s a non stop process from 1975. Most probably there isn’t any organization left today, which is free from Jamat influence. From English medium schools to universities like IBA,BUET, DU,CU even private universities like NSU, IUB every educational institution. They have their supporters in top position of every Govt. Office , N.G.O. everywhere. I say , they are the most organized institution in Bangladesh.

Frankly speaking I don’t like one of the oldest bangla blog sites to be used in this way. They may say , that Freedom of Speech is equal for all. Well , I thought so. Even I am thinking so. But think carefully its a human right which is only applicable to human. Do you really think , those Pakistani collaborators are human ? They should have the privilege to express their view ? Isn’t it enough that they are living in the country which they opposed ? Isn’t it enough they rode the power for once ?

It’s a request to the blog site administrators to ban those users who publish “moududi” doctrines there, otherwise you can not ignore the charge of helping them spreading.

A doctor should …

This morning I read a news . 5 patients died in Rajshahi Medical College as doctors declined to serve due to some unpleasant incidents between doctors and patients ( doctors claimed , some patient’s relative beat them)

Hmm, I don’t want to discuss about what happened actually. Whatever it was , my key concern is doctors retreated themselves from providing service. It can be mentioned that , only a few weeks ago , almost similar scenario was created during the clash between 4th class employees and doctors. And as a consequence doctors declined to serve.

I wonder in which country we live ? Is there any law at all ? or is there anything called humanity ? Do we have proper respect to existing laws ?

Seems to me , the answer is a big NO.

Obviously we protest any kind of misbehavior against doctors and expect authority should take proper legal steps against them. But why retreating themselves from serving ? How could they let a patient die ? It’s not a question of being a doctor , it’s question of being a human. And if you read the whole news with care , you would find it normal to lose your thoughts , take some offensive stances , when your wife is dying , and no doctor is showed up for hours. I am not justifying his misbehaviors , but request you to understand how a man should feel.

Think that , 5 innocent people died only for some arrogant doctors. Everything will be normal in days , everybody will lead their normal life except those bunch of ill fated family who lost their nears and dears for some “snob” , “so-called-human” doctors.

Can those doctors do the same thing if that patient were in a private clinic ? I guess NO.

I had a very terrible experiment in Govt. Hospital, Where I had to go once to show my pathological test reports to one of the doctors. It was 11:00 in the morning , and I couldn’t find that doctor. Someone said “He’s in doctors common room ( or canteen) , and taking some cookie and tea” . I waited for almost 1 hour , and he didn’t show up. When I decide to leave , he appeared , after almost 1:15 minutes. There were almost 15-20 patients waiting for him for hours, most of them are seriously sick. Why they waited ?They waited because they had no option to go anywhere else , where they could be treated well in exchange of cash. Though not 100% doctors are like this , there are surely some very good exception, but you would definitely agree with me that , most of the doctors exactly match with above scenario.

These incidents somehow kill me very much. I know we can’t pay doctors well , as they should be , after studying the hardest syllabus among all U G subjects. But they should remember this , being a doctor is something very much special and noble. if you think you can’t continue to serve in such a low money , then you should give it up. But you haven’t no right kill hopes of thousand innocent lives.

I strictly think , retreating themselves from serving , is somewhat a crime and they should face the legal action for their deeds as they all are killer of 5 innocent lives.

Latest RapidShare Hacks — The ultimate key word !

Rapidshare is almost a legend in public file hosting business in Internet. It’s really hard to find a dedicated internet user or semi dedicated user , who hasn’t heard the name rapidshare. Actually not only ,Rapidshare but also Megaupload is another Guru in this business. Thousands of files stored in these public servers by users all over the internet makes these sites something special. Though, it’s declared that , if you share any warez, illegal software, copy right protected item in those servers, and they get a complain against that , then files will be deleted at once. But heck ! There are millions of files and links are distributed in thousands of sites / networks. So its really hard to trace all the illegal files. Almost maximum warez servers live on this public download servers like rapidshare.

Hey , do you know another business is going on regarding rapidshare or megaupload ? its the premium account business. You may have experienced the necessity of having a rapidshare premium account. Some smart people are exploiting this issue . Since Rapidshare gives some free premium accounts, some people posted article, blogs or posts telling that they are distributing free accounts. Not only this , some are saying that , they have a huge list of hacked rapidshare premium account. They give you a text file link which is located in rapidshare server itself. well how many of you got that given user login working ? Myself is not lucky enough to get those free accounts 😦 Actually many of users are helping some users to grab premium hours beyond their knowledge .

How it is ?You may have heard that the more the file you have uploaded is downloaded , the more premium points will you get. So what’s worthy like cheating people by saying about free premium accounts ! well , I am not telling all tricks are useless. Some of them are important. Tricks like eliminating waiting time by a JavaScript code or IP barrier by /ipconfig flushdns , /ipconfig renew ,/ipconfig release all these commands ( it worked in ancient days , you know 😀 ). But Rapidshare is always changing their policy to cope up with fastest brain of hackers. So you can’t be sure that , tricks you are using today will work tomorrow. Rapidshare is also a very common policy for blog writers to attract traffic . A blog title like “Latest Rapidshare Hacks” will bring a hell of traffic in your site. And who cares if you give them a hack which is obsolete for years. And interestingly , all the rapidshare premium hunter about whom I have told earlier, also make anonymous comments on these posts giving links of their uploaded “zoombie ( yes I would like to call it so ) file”.

So far I have found only one satisfactory solution to this rapidshare premium problem. Though i’m afraid this is not easy for everyone. You may have heard about rapidleech , a free server transfer script , allows you to download rapidshare (with some other major file sharing sites) files to your faster server, and then you can download files from your server to pc , at your convenient time. But main problem is , you are assumed to have a fast box connection with proper access. Remember , this requires (rapidleech) only PHP , nothing else ( i mean mysql or stuffs). so , think twice before downloading a long login list for rapid premium. May be you are helping some one to help his premium period unconsciously, and more importantly someone is cheating you , exploiting you.

Complex For Middle Class !

Do we really have a middle class in our society ( according to earning) ? A very old and debatable question. Its true that there’s no “true” and “proper” middle class in our society.And additionally I would like to think that , its a bad luck for us, since its proven that middle class are always pioneer in leading any social revolutions as per history suggests !

Whatever it is , for my current writing I would like to assume that , we have a middle class culture in our society though it’s not really middle class.

Generally what are the most important things other than money in our life ? Answer may vary , but I think you will agree with me that “Religion” and “Sex” are both very potential choices. Thoughts were occurring in my mind for many days, how these really affect peoples mind.

After some days thoughts, I came to a conclusion that , two extreme classes namely Rich and Poor are not bothered by these usually. These bother only the remaining class aka middle class.

Why I am telling this ?

Let’s start with religion.Religion is the most ancient, well established institution among human society having histories greater than thousands years. Most of the religions give the outline of what to do and what not to do. Not to do list is a huge one. Drinking , telling lie, killing etc etc are placed in not to do list. From my experience I have seen that, there are many rich families who regularly make their prayer. Besides they don’t think twice before drinking ( thought I don’t think drinking is an offense) . They all have their high society stuffs and so on.

Same situation lies with Sex too. Most of them really don’t have any complex about sex before marriage, sleeping with other man/woman.

Look at lower class ( poor). They don’t have much headache about religion. You can see lots of rickshaws on street on the time of Friday Jummah Time. Obviously reason behind that is not same for both upper class and lower class. A lower class people is truly more honest than an upper class people ( most of the cases) and he struggles from hand to mouth to for maintaining his livelihood. But the result is same , neither he can’t pay much attention to religion nor it(religion) has a deep impact on his life. Without going much deeper , we can also say that lower class people also don’t have the hesitation about the right or wrong in SEX.

But all the above stated problems are well existed for middle class. they thought twice before making any decisions. Its middle class , who are always bothered about religion, about its instructions, right or wrong etc stuffs. They have also same sort of thinking about sex too.

I guess it’s all about education and ethics. Middle class is such a place, where you have a bit more money than lower class with addition of education. This class always hesitate to take a decision. I don’t know , whether they are doing right or wrong !

May be time can answer this question as well as it does.

ISP : Another name of client harassments

Its been a long time since I wrote my last blog. Actually , my tremendous pressure of study and other affairs (!!) didn’t give me much room to write some craps here.

Well , for last few days , I am in serious trouble with my ISP. Those who knows me , has experienced the pain of chatting with me in MSN or anywhere else ( IRC ) , knows much better than me about my connection.

What’s the main problem with my line ? Well , it’s the same problem which are you facing more or less with your isp , if you are living in Bangladesh and using some $hit named Broadband. Actually, all ISPs start their business with a decent bandwidth, early customers think that their ISP is awesome and they are gonna rock forever. But situation seems to turn around when ISP becomes more familiar in the territory. A great number of people starts to take connection from them and all on a sudden those bunch of “intelligent” people got that , they are earning great money. Those idiots doesn’t seem to realize that , they need increasing b/w for their increasing amount of clients. They are trying to reach 200 clients with the b/w they bought for 20 clients. Besides, most of the isp setup are actually done by some free lancer network engineer or someone who is not 24 hrs dedicated to that ISP business. So you cant expect anything named service from them. Right now , my ISP hasn’t any network specialist with them. So a quack “network engineer (as he claims himself)” is trying to set things up. He’s facing the hurdles of running Linux server without proper knowledge. So , one very nice evening he requested me to set his linux gateway server up. And I deny that proposal at once obviously with great decency.

Actually the core reasons behind all these problems are same. It’s lack of regulation in this business from GOVT. Its true that , we have a very costly b/w infrastructure because of foolish acts did by previous Govt. regarding submarine cable. But beside that , ISP s are doing there business according to their own wish. They are selling the same amount of b/w for the same price where as b/w cost is reduced ( though not abruptly as it should ). So all the ISP authorities are just looking their own benefit. They are taking the reduction in b/w price as their scope for earning much profit. and we , the end users are totally messed up.

People in Bangladesh think that Internet means only VoIP. No one seems to bother about the low b/w at end users for which we cant browse properly, can’t download anything bigger and specially can’t upload anything.

Sorry to say , sometimes I feel cursed while surfing internet as a Bangldeshi citizen. I know it would be too much ridiculous to expect that C G will give a look to this sector , and we will get a fair enough connection in next 6 months.

Future less Politics , Politics less Future

Already all of you know that , Tareque Rahman has been arrested. Frankly Speaking , I can hardly remember when I saw last time cent per cent people happy after hearing a political arrest news. And I am 100% sure , BNP and current AL didn’t have much difference. At least before 2001. Though AL is much more liberal as per their rules, But their leaders are not follower of their rules. Only a few days ago we saw some example regarding “Fatwa Agreement” . Anyway , back to the point. From 2001 , Tareque Rahman and other leaders set some sort of ill political manners , which was very much alarming.
And only Tareque Rahman helped BNP to reach such an altitude in corruption that , it was hard for any political party to break.
Now , the burning Question is , What is the Future of politics ? In proper term , I can hardly see any future of politics. I guess 1% of current politicians would hardly survive from Anti Corruption group. Then what would be our political state ? Democracy , for which we sacrificed a lot , is in front of a huge question mark. As I told in other writings I don’t trust “everybody” in politics , whether he is newcomer or not. Its the most established truth of the country that political parties stink and they did all the works to put Bangladesh in trouble. But with a deeper a thought , you would agree with me , that we have huge numbers ( in fact some 95%-98%) of AL and BNP supporters. It would hard for them , to vote in next election. Besides I think, it would be harder for parties to nominate 300 clean personalities in next election ( I have doubt. Do they have these number of honest politicans in their party ? )

As I see , next days are very good for us in clean and plane eyes. But with a thinker’s eye , things are not as simple as we think.

So I am with my fingers crossed. I truely believe politicians are much more connected to politics and normal people than any other “star-personality” and every party has at least 1 person in every constituency. It was just a result of bad practice , that parties selected dis honest persons for election. Now , if they try to select real leaders, things would go positive for bangladesh. Remember , we can not clean the garbage overnight whereas we deposited them for almost 35 years. So we should not expect radical change for our own sake. If anything like this happens , then that would be a indicator of some future trouble waiting for us in near future.
